The Global Waqf Alliance (GWA) is committed to promoting a culture of trust, accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship across the global waqf ecosystem.
Waqf is an enduring trust established for a defined purpose and the benefit of present and future generations. Its sustainability depends not only on the preservation of endowed assets, but also on the integrity of the institutions, governance systems, professionals, and partnerships entrusted with their management.
GWA seeks to advance governance practices that strengthen institutional credibility, protect the intentions of waqf founders, promote responsible asset management, and ensure that waqf continues to serve legitimate purposes in accordance with Shariah principles and applicable laws.
Our approach recognises that effective governance must combine principled stewardship with professional management, sound controls, transparency, and measurable accountability.
Standards Development and Institutional Cooperation
The Global Waqf Alliance aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, institutional cooperation, and the development and adoption of suitable governance practices across diverse waqf environments.
This work may include:
Governance guidance and institutional capacity-building programmes.
Knowledge exchange between national waqf authorities and management institutions.
Research on waqf governance, legal frameworks, and institutional performance.
Professional training for waqf managers and related specialists.
Responsible investment and asset management guidance.
Digital recordkeeping, reporting, and institutional transparency initiatives.
Dialogue on good practices that can be adapted to different national contexts.
Any standards, benchmarks, accreditation arrangements, or formal compliance assessments should be introduced only under an approved mandate, with clear methodology, governance, and implementation procedures. Participation in GWA activities should not automatically be interpreted as certification, accreditation, or regulatory approval.
